Supervolcano and human - what is the interdependence?

There are several active supervolcanoes that constantly draw attention of scientists. These giants differ from ordinary volcanoes by size and by the fact that their main part is hidden under the ground. If ordinary volcanoes can be studied and can be predictable to some extent, it is much harder to do with supervolcanoes. Supervolcanoes exist in geological timelines that exceeds any common human time scale.

Yellowstone caldera is one of these giants. The last Yellowstone eruption took place many thousands years ago, long before it was discovered. Comprehensive studies there were started by the scientists less than 200 years ago.

Here is the brief history of Yellowstone supervolcano creation:

• 2,1 mln years ago an eruption became a continental catastrophe – more than 2500 кm³ of rocks were thrown out. Volcanic ash covered more than a quarter of the territory of the North America. Island Park caldera and tuff deposits of Huckleberry Ridge were formed.
• 1,3 mln years ago an eruption of Island Park caldera caused creation of Henry's Fork Caldera. 280 кm³ of rocks were thrown out. Mesa Falls Tuff deposits were formed.
• 640 thousand years ago took place an eruption that caused creation of the huge caldera with the circumference approximately equal to 150 km and Lava Creek Tuff deposits. 

How are the supervolcanoes “formed”?

The first thing that comes to one’s mind is a familiar picture of a conical volcano with a crater inside. However, it is not so. Only some geysers have such a form. Supervolcano is a wide territory of thinned soil's crust with so-called blister underneath filled with boiling pulsating magma under the huge pressure. Several ordinary volcanoes can be also present on this territory. They can erupt from time to time and this could be compared to steam release from the overheated boiler. But the main danger comes from the underground “boiler” in a shape of the bubble with magma. As supervolcanoes do not erupt but blow up, it is exactly this boiler that blows up.

What signs show that the Supervolcano is going to blow up:

• The earth crust over the Supervolcano lifts up to  tens and even hundreds of meters;
• The soil temperature raises up to 60-70°С;
• Concentration of hydrogen sulphide and helium abruptly increases in the atmosphere.

Lyrical digression: don’t people who are ready to “blow up” emotionally show the same signs? 

What is today’s situation in the Yellowstone caldera?

Scientists have been asking the question “When will the eruption happen?” instead of “Will the eruption happen?” for some time now. There are enough reasons for this question. Starting from the statistics of the earthquakes in the caldera, and considering other factors that prove readiness of the Supervolcano to erupt. It was a miracle that the Yellowstone didn’t blow up in April 2014. 

After certain stabilization its volcanic activity began to grow again. The most tense moment was June 2017, when more than 1000 earthquakes took place during one month, one of them reached 4,36 magnitude according to USGS. On top of that, the earthquakes started to happen closer to the surface of the earth’s crust. New data shows that the speed of magma rise also increased, the temperature of the soil reached the boiling-point in some spots, new cracks appeared and gasses from magma started to evaporate through them. 

Unusual activity of Steamboat, the biggest in the world geyser, was registered this year in March. It was accompanied with strong earth vibration. Three big eruptions took place during one week and the reason is unknown. Earlier, intervals between eruptions were from one month to 5 years. This time, the shortest “quiet period” between active phases was up to 8 days. The experts think that the change of eruption periodicity of the Steamboat Geyser is related to the movement of magma closer to the surface of the earth. Moreover, other geysers became active recently: Echinus Geyser and Giant Geyser.

The most beautiful lake on the territory of the Yellowstone Caldera is Yellowstone Lake. We can observe on its bottom the same processes as common for the whole caldera. The water temperature constantly raises. 

The coastline changes, water releases some parts of the shore while floods others, the lake seems to flow closer to the south. This is caused by bulge of the bottom created by magma (the Sour Creek Dome (SC)) that grows, becomes higher and changes the angle of the bottom. According to the US researchers, another 700-meter long bulge is growing under the water as evidenced by the shifting of sediments. 

There is a way out!

Needless to say, the state of caldera is a problem for the whole humanity. Scientists name different reasons for the Supervolcano explosion. It is not just about the magma temperature increase in the abyssal bubble. Another reason is hidden in the process of tectonic plates’ movement, related to glaciers’ melting and the speed of the Earth rotation, which is being slowed down in recent years. Different very expensive options of how human can influence the processes that take place in our nature are being proposed, in order to prevent eruption. But! We search for solution of the problem in the external, and it would be better to remind ourselves that the outer world is just a reflection of the inner. So, what is that we have not done as a humanity after we have been given a chance in 2014? Why do the geological processes become active again after a certain stabilization time in Yellowstone?
