“Science is just about asking questions, some of which have answers and many do not. But the asking of questions is how it all starts,” says Chris Impey, researcher, scientist, and Distinguished Professor of Astronomy at the University of Arizona.
In this video, we will touch on the mysterious and poorly studied yet very interesting topic of black holes. Perhaps, in the near future, someone will be able to answer the chicken and egg question, that is, what came first: black holes or galaxies? As for now, together with Chris Impey, we will discuss the most interesting issues in the field of black hole research.
From this interview, you will find out:
⚫️ What led the professor to study black holes?
⚫️ How can he explain to a six-year-old child what a black hole is?
⚫️ What kind of equipment is currently used for observing black holes?
⚫️ What are the most interesting phenomena Chris Impey observed in the Universe while studying black holes?
⚫️ In the scientist's opinion, what happens to information inside a black hole?
⚫️ What happens to an object when it approaches a black hole and falls into it?
⚫️ Which recent discoveries in the studies of black holes are the most interesting?
In the modern Universe, black holes seem to be something insignificant: they make up only about 0.1% of a galaxy's mass. A question may arise: why pay attention to them at all? Yet, why do black holes actually appear in the Universe, and what are they needed for? Many hypotheses sound great, but how can we check which ones are true?
Numerous questions have accumulated in astrophysics. It is time to find the answers.
This interview was filmed specifically for a new series of international research projects, "Kaleidoscope of Facts," on "Black Holes: Scientific Facts and Hypotheses."
