Atmospheric rivers flooded California, a new hydrothermal explosion occurred in Yellowstone, snow fell in Saudi Arabia, and in the UAE, more rain fell in two days than normally does in a whole year. This is not an apocalyptic movie scenario — it is the reality of December 2025. Climate disasters, atmospheric nanoplastic, and the alarming decline in human intelligence are now inseparably linked.
In California, the “Pineapple Express” brought record rainfall, turning streets into raging rivers. A driver became trapped in a car caught in a water trap, and despite rescuers’ efforts, his life was lost within minutes. Firefighters risked their lives to evacuate a family with an infant from a home surrounded by water.
In Yellowstone National Park, a hydrothermal explosion sent columns of mud and rocks tens of meters into the air. This is not the first such event in recent months. After the July eruption, the Biscuit Basin area was closed to visitors, with cameras and seismic stations installed; however, natural processes continue to accelerate every day.
In Italy, Elba Island experienced its fourth major storm of the year. Residents call these events a “recurring nightmare.” In just a few hours, 65 mm of rain fell — more than the average monthly total. Children were evacuated from a kindergarten in Porto Azzurro, and some villages were completely cut off from the outside world.
Something incredible happened in Saudi Arabia: snow fell in the desert. In the mountainous areas of Jabal al-Lawz, temperatures dropped to -4°C. This is the first such event in almost thirty years. At the same time, floods in the eastern regions submerged streets and cars in Al-Jubail. People shared photos of snow-covered desert plateaus on social media, not realizing that this is not just a spectacle, but a troubling warning from the planet.
Record rainfall poured over the southern provinces of Iran. On Qeshm Island, 140 mm of precipitation fell in a single day — more than the annual average. Over three days, the total rainfall exceeded 200 mm. In Bandar Khomeini, 187 mm of rain was recorded. In the Bordkhun and Bagan areas, 60% to 100% of the tomato crop was destroyed across roughly 1,000 hectares.
In the United Arab Emirates, the storm struck with such intensity that more rain fell in two days than normally does in an entire year. In Ras Al Khaimah, 123 mm of rain was recorded — compared to an annual average of 100 mm. Around 300 people, including families with children, were trapped in the mountains due to landslides. They spent the night there, uncertain whether the next landslide would be fatal.
Scientific studies show that micro- and nanoplastics are now actively participating in climate processes. These particles disrupt the water cycle and the planet’s energy balance. But the most alarming effect is on the human brain. Plastic particles can pass through the blood-brain barrier, accumulate in the brain, and trigger constant background stress. This blocks the most energy-demanding processes: analysis, planning, and critical thinking. As a result, people begin to act impulsively, have a harder time recognizing real threats, and respond to them inadequately.
The climate is changing rapidly, yet our perception of this threat is slowed by plastic particles in our brains. The irony is that solving the plastic pollution problem requires precisely the mental abilities that the brain shuts down first under the influence of plastic — memory, attention, and creativity.
We are standing on the edge of a critical point. If nothing is done, we risk living in a world where people can see danger but cannot fully comprehend it. A mind capable of finding solutions will no longer function at full capacity. And the time we have left to act is shrinking with each passing day.
