The planet is sending us increasingly alarming signals. Water levels in rivers are rising above historical highs. The ground is shaking from powerful tremors. And in the sky, phenomena are occurring that were once thought impossible. These are not isolated events. They are a system of warnings that we cannot ignore.
In Vietnam, the water level of the Cam Ly River surpassed the 2019 record. Within just a few hours, more than 6,200 homes were flooded. People waded through murky currents, rescuing children and the most essential belongings.
In Japan, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake triggered a tsunami and caused widespread destruction. In the port of Hachinohe, fountains of sand and water burst from cracked ground. At a hospital, three floors were flooded after the fire suppression system was activated by the tremors.
In Kamchatka, a cyclone with winds reaching 46 m/s tore roofs off houses. And on December 9, residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky witnessed another anomalous phenomenon — a thunder snowstorm. Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia, a storm brought 135 mm of rain to Jeddah in just five hours. This exceeds the average monthly rainfall for December by more than eleven times. And in Türkiye, in the Alanya region, a full month’s worth of rain — 150 mm — fell in a short period of time.
Behind every number are real lives. Behind every fact are real losses. Scientists have discovered a troubling link between these disasters and plastic pollution. Micro- and nanoparticles of plastic, already present in the atmosphere and oceans, are altering the mechanisms of moisture condensation. This leads to abrupt shifts in cloud formation processes and creates conditions for extreme weather events.
We can conduct as many studies as we want, and the scientific community is doing everything it can, but until the wider public hears this alarm, nothing will change. Only by acting together can we meet this challenge and preserve the most precious thing we have — life itself.
The time to act is now. Not tomorrow. Not next year. Each of us can contribute to solving these problems. Our choices today will determine whether we have a tomorrow.
