On Monday, May 12, Mount Etna, on the Italian island of Sicily, displayed its thirteenth episode of activity in recent months. The Southeast Crater suddenly became active in the evening, and a series of powerful explosions began. The volcano ejected fountains of molten lava, resulting in the formation of two small lava flows that flowed to the south and to the east.
The ash cloud dissipated in an east-southeast direction, showering ash on roofs and cars in Zafferana Etnea. Seismologists with the INGV noted that around 10:45 PM, the level of volcanic tremor rose to a peak, and by 3:15 AM, it sharply dropped, signaling the end of the phase.
On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, a powerful seismic swarm occurred in the area of the Campi Flegrei supervolcano. 49 tremors were recorded, the strongest reaching magnitude 4.4 and magnitude 3.5, with the epicenter located near the city of Pozzuoli. The Campi Flegrei caldera is one of the most dangerous volcanic systems in Europe, situated in a densely populated area that includes the cities of Naples and Pozzuoli.
The underground tremors forced authorities to evacuate schools and public buildings, suspend regional rail service, and deploy emergency coordination centers. Over half a million people live in the "red" zone of the caldera. The Ministry of Civil Protection declared a state of emergency, as the area has been experiencing a swarm of earthquakes for several months, with individual tremors clearly felt by local residents and causing damage and injuries.
Previously, earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater had occurred here only once every few decades. However, in the last two months alone, two such events have been recorded: a magnitude 4.6 earthquake on March 13 and a magnitude 4.4 earthquake on May 13.
On Wednesday, May 14, at 12:51 AM local time, a powerful magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred south of the Greek island of Crete. Its hypocenter was located at a depth of 71 kilometers, which is approximately 44.1 miles. It was felt throughout the eastern Mediterranean, including in Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon.
The observed increase in the number and magnitude of earthquakes, as well as other natural disasters, fully corresponds to a mathematical model, the results of which were presented several years ago by the ALLATRA international group of scientists. One of its representatives, Doctor Egon Cholakian, in his address, highlights the current trend of increasing seismic activity on the planet and provides a forecast for the coming years. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with and delve into this information, as the scientist also discusses technologies developed by the ALLATRA scientific community to mitigate negative geodynamic processes. Our common future depends on this.
